What's Happening?
Israeli biotech company Brevel has announced a partnership with India's Wave Group to construct a new production facility in Uttar Pradesh. This facility, estimated to cost between US$10-15 million, will have a planned capacity of 300,000 liters, significantly
expanding Brevel's current 5,000-liter operation in Israel. The new plant will utilize sugar-processing byproducts as fermentation feedstocks, transforming established agricultural waste into higher-value food ingredients. Brevel has developed a unique method that incorporates light into bioreactors to help microorganisms, such as chlorella, produce proteins, natural pigments, and other valuable food ingredients. The initial product from this facility will be Brevel's Purallis chlorella, a clean-label ingredient suitable for food, beverages, and supplements, with plans to accommodate other organisms and plant-cell cultures that benefit from light.
Why It's Important?
This collaboration marks a significant step towards making affordable, nutritious, and naturally derived ingredients more accessible in everyday foods. By leveraging sugar-processing byproducts, the initiative addresses both cost reduction and waste minimization within the agricultural sector. The substantial increase in production capacity from 5,000 liters to 300,000 liters indicates a move towards industrial-scale manufacturing, which is crucial for achieving price competitiveness with conventional food ingredients. This development could lead to a broader adoption of microalgae-derived ingredients, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional protein sources and contributing to global food security. The partnership also highlights the growing trend of international collaborations in biotech to scale innovative food technologies.
What's Next?
The immediate next step is the construction and operationalization of the US$10-15 million production facility in Uttar Pradesh. Once operational, the facility will begin producing Brevel's Purallis chlorella, aiming to supply the food, beverage, and supplement markets with this clean-label ingredient. The long-term vision includes expanding the facility's capabilities to cultivate other organisms and plant-cell cultures that benefit from Brevel's light-infused bioreactor technology. This expansion could lead to a diversified portfolio of innovative food ingredients. The success of this large-scale operation in India could serve as a model for similar ventures globally, further accelerating the integration of sustainable and cost-effective ingredients into the food supply chain.
Beyond the Headlines
This partnership represents a deeper trend in the food industry: the convergence of biotechnology, agricultural waste valorization, and sustainable food production. By transforming agricultural byproducts into high-value ingredients, Brevel and Wave Group are contributing to a circular economy model, reducing waste and enhancing resource efficiency. The use of light in bioreactors for fermentation is a technological innovation that could unlock new possibilities for producing a wide range of bio-based products beyond food ingredients. This approach also addresses the increasing consumer demand for natural, clean-label, and sustainably sourced food options. The success of such ventures could influence regulatory bodies to develop supportive frameworks for novel food ingredients, fostering further innovation and investment in the alternative protein and ingredient sectors.
