What's Happening?
Zoë Peterson, the creator and performer behind the Cincinnati horror hostess character Sally Salem, has significantly developed her puppetry and puppet-making skills for her theatrical productions. Initially, Peterson had no prior experience in puppet creation,
crafting her first 'demon cake' puppet from car sponges, a pie tin, and trash. As the Sally Salem series evolved, particularly for 'Serials' in 2024 and 2025, she progressed to more functional puppet designs. During a snowstorm in January 2025, Peterson taught herself to use contact cement and build shapes from foam, utilizing repurposed materials like old couch parts, curtain pieces, and T-shirts due to necessity. Her work now includes teaching puppetry and performance classes at Know Theatre and pop-up workshops, demonstrating a continuous learning process in her craft.
Why It's Important?
This development highlights the growth of independent theater and performance art in local U.S. communities, showcasing how artists adapt and acquire new skills to realize their creative visions. Peterson's journey from novice to instructor in puppetry demonstrates the accessibility and evolving nature of artistic expression, even with limited resources. Her use of sustainable practices by repurposing materials for puppet construction also reflects a growing trend in the arts towards environmental consciousness and ingenuity. For the Cincinnati arts scene, Sally Salem's productions contribute to the local cultural landscape, offering unique entertainment that blends horror, humor, and puppetry, and fostering community engagement through workshops and performances.
What's Next?
Peterson has several upcoming Sally Salem projects, including an all-ages show titled 'Trick or Treat, Sally Salem!' at Know Theatre on October 25 as part of their OctKNOWber Nights. She is also actively seeking opportunities to participate in puppet slams, cabarets, and events like BLINK. Her continued teaching of puppetry and performance classes at Know Theatre and through pop-up workshops indicates a commitment to sharing her craft and fostering new talent. The ongoing development of the Sally Salem series, which incorporates themes of grief and chosen family, suggests a sustained presence in the Cincinnati arts community, with future productions likely to explore deeper narrative and technical complexities.
Beyond the Headlines
The Sally Salem project, beyond its entertainment value, explores profound themes such as grief and the concept of chosen family, presenting them through the unique lens of horror and puppetry. Peterson describes Sally Salem's world as one where characters are brought together by inexplicable tragedies, and grief is openly acknowledged and processed. This approach offers a distinctive way for audiences, including children in all-ages shows, to engage with difficult emotions and life experiences. By blending humor, horror, and heartfelt narratives, Sally Salem creates a space where vulnerability is embraced, and the resilience of community is celebrated. The project's evolution also underscores the power of creative expression as a coping mechanism and a tool for connection.
