Recent research from the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research has revealed that plant-based diets significantly promote gut, immune, metabolic, and cardiovascular health. The studies, led by Jenna AbuSalim and Joshua Rabinowitz, found that plant fibers
and proteins reprogram microbial metabolism, boosting the production of beneficial metabolites while suppressing harmful ones. The research highlights the role of indigestible proteins, termed 'proteins imitating fiber' (Prif), in enhancing gut health by shifting the balance of phenol metabolites. These findings suggest that dietary interventions could be developed to manipulate the microbiome for therapeutic purposes.
