What's Happening?
Remodel Health, an individualized benefits platform, and Lively, a health and lifestyle benefits provider, have partnered to launch the Remodel Health HSA, powered by Lively. This collaboration allows employees using a CHOICE Arrangement (formerly ICHRA)
through Remodel Health to select an individual health plan and open a Health Savings Account (HSA) in a single, integrated process. According to Austin Lehman, CEO of Remodel Health, this HSA strategy offers significant tax advantages, with participating employees saving an average of 25% on medical expenses funded through payroll, and employers saving 7.65% in FICA tax. The integration aims to simplify the process for employees, who can now choose coverage and set up their HSA simultaneously, addressing the previous challenge of managing benefits across separate systems. Recent legislative changes have also expanded HSA eligibility to include more Bronze and catastrophic plans, increasing the percentage of Remodel Health's membership that is HSA-eligible from 30% to over 40%.
Why It's Important?
This partnership is significant for the U.S. healthcare and benefits landscape as it streamlines the often-complex process of managing health benefits and savings. By integrating individual health plan selection with HSA enrollment, it empowers employees with greater control over their healthcare choices and financial planning. The tax advantages of HSAs, including tax-free contributions, growth, and qualified spending, become more accessible, potentially leading to increased employee engagement with their health benefits. For employers, offering a more user-friendly and tax-efficient benefits package can be a powerful tool for attracting and retaining talent, especially in a competitive job market. The expansion of HSA eligibility to more plan types also means a broader segment of the workforce can now leverage these savings mechanisms, potentially reducing out-of-pocket medical costs for many Americans.
What's Next?
Employers preparing for 2027 benefits can explore the Remodel Health HSA to enhance their benefits offerings. The integrated platform is expected to simplify the benefits enrollment process for employees, potentially leading to higher adoption rates of HSAs. Remodel Health will continue to provide guidance on CHOICE Arrangement strategy, individual health plan selection, compliance, and employee advocacy, while Lively will manage the HSA experience, including mobile app access, debit cards, reimbursements, and investment options. This collaboration could set a precedent for other benefits providers to integrate their services, further simplifying the healthcare benefits landscape for both employers and employees across the U.S.
Beyond the Headlines
The move towards individualized benefits and integrated HSA solutions reflects a broader trend in the U.S. healthcare system: the consumerization of healthcare. As employers shift from defined benefits to defined contribution strategies, employees are increasingly taking on more responsibility for their healthcare decisions and costs. This partnership facilitates that shift by providing tools that make it easier for individuals to manage their health finances. The emphasis on tax-advantaged savings through HSAs also highlights a growing awareness of the long-term financial implications of healthcare, encouraging individuals to save for future medical needs. This could lead to a more financially literate and engaged healthcare consumer base, potentially influencing how health plans are designed and utilized in the future.
