What's Happening?
Old Dominion University's women's soccer team has swept the Sun Belt Weekly Awards for the current week. Ashley Economopoulos was named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week, and Dylan McEntarfer received the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week honor.
This recognition follows Old Dominion's undefeated week, which included two clean sheets. The Monarchs secured a 4-0 victory against Louisiana Tech on Thursday night and followed it with a 2-0 win over Coastal Carolina on Sunday for Senior Day. Economopoulos was instrumental in both matches, scoring game-winning goals. She tallied six points, with two goals against Louisiana Tech and one against Coastal Carolina. McEntarfer played a crucial role in the defense, contributing to both shutouts and scoring her second goal of the season against Coastal Carolina, extending Old Dominion's lead to 2-0 in the second half. This marks the first time Economopoulos has earned the offensive award, while McEntarfer is the fourth Monarch to be named Defensive Player of the Week this season.
Why It's Important?
This achievement highlights Old Dominion's strong performance in the Sun Belt Conference, demonstrating their dominance in women's soccer. Sweeping the weekly awards not only boosts team morale but also enhances the university's athletic reputation within the conference and nationally. For players like Economopoulos and McEntarfer, these individual accolades can significantly impact their collegiate careers, potentially leading to further recognition and opportunities. The team's ability to secure back-to-back clean sheets against conference opponents, including a notable win over Coastal Carolina, underscores their defensive strength and strategic execution. This success could attract more talent to the program and increase fan engagement, contributing to the overall growth and visibility of women's collegiate soccer. The consistent performance of Old Dominion's defense, with seven conference clean sheets and nine overall, positions them as a formidable contender in the league.
What's Next?
Old Dominion will aim to maintain its momentum and continue its strong performance in the remaining Sun Belt Conference matches. The team's recent success, particularly the defensive solidity and offensive efficiency demonstrated by Economopoulos and McEntarfer, will be crucial as they approach the conference tournament. Other teams in the Sun Belt will likely analyze Old Dominion's strategies, especially their defensive tactics, to find ways to counter their strong play. The individual awards could also place Economopoulos and McEntarfer under increased scrutiny from opposing teams, who will likely focus on neutralizing their impact. The Monarchs' continued success could also influence their seeding in the conference tournament, potentially giving them a more favorable path to championship contention. The team will need to sustain its high level of play to capitalize on this recent recognition and achieve its season goals.
