What's Happening?
The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) has announced a change in venue for the 2027 WFDF World Under-24 Ultimate Championships (WU24). Originally slated for Kamisu, Japan, the event will now take place in Logroño, Spain, from June 19-26, 2027. This decision
was made following a review of the Japan Flying Disc Association's (JFDA) commitments to other international events in 2027. Both WFDF and JFDA agreed that relocating the championships was the most appropriate course of action to ensure the successful delivery of all events to the highest standards. Logroño is a familiar host city for WFDF, having previously hosted the 2025 World Under-24 Ultimate Championships and the 2026 World Junior Ultimate Championships.
Why It's Important?
This venue change, while a logistical adjustment, underscores WFDF's commitment to ensuring high-quality international competitions. By moving the event to a proven host city like Logroño, WFDF aims to minimize potential disruptions and provide an optimal experience for athletes and spectators. For the ultimate frisbee community, particularly the under-24 age group, this ensures that a major championship will proceed with established infrastructure and experienced organizers. The decision also highlights the growing global nature of ultimate frisbee, with international federations needing to manage complex schedules and resources across multiple events and continents. The continuity of hosting in Logroño could further solidify its reputation as a premier destination for flying disc sports.
What's Next?
WFDF will now proceed with the planning and organization of the 2027 World Under-24 Ultimate Championships in Logroño, Spain. Further information, including team registration details and the official event bulletin, will be communicated to Member National Federations in due course. National teams representing WFDF Member National Federations will begin their preparations for the championships, which will feature Mixed, Women’s, and Open divisions. The experienced organizing team in Logroño will leverage its past successes to deliver another high-standard event. Athletes will focus on training and qualification processes in anticipation of the competition in June 2027.
Beyond the Headlines
The relocation of a major international sporting event, even for logistical reasons, can have broader implications for the sport's development and international relations. While Japan will miss out on hosting this particular event, the collaborative decision-making process between WFDF and JFDA demonstrates a mature approach to managing global sports calendars. For Spain, and specifically Logroño, repeatedly hosting WFDF championships can boost local tourism, economy, and sports infrastructure, fostering a stronger ultimate frisbee culture within the country. This also provides an opportunity for the sport to gain more visibility and attract new participants in the region, contributing to its overall growth and recognition as a legitimate international sport.
