USA Rare Earth has commenced construction on a new $1.2 billion facility in Blacksburg, South Carolina, dedicated to manufacturing rare earth metals and magnets. This 800,000-square-foot plant, located
on a 124-acre site in Cherokee County, is projected to create approximately 490 high-skill manufacturing jobs. The company aims for an annual production capacity of 6,400 metric tons of sintered neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets and 5,000 metric tons of strip-cast metal and alloy, with commissioning expected to begin in 2028. The project is significantly supported by the U.S. Department of Commerce, which is providing up to $1.6 billion through the CHIPS Act, including $277 million in direct grants and $1.3 billion in senior secured loans. USA Rare Earth selected Blacksburg due to South Carolina's advanced manufacturing workforce, power availability, transportation infrastructure, proximity to customers and suppliers, and strong state and local support. The company also announced a $250,000 contribution to Spartanburg Community College to support its new SPARK Center, aimed at workforce development in the region.
