What's Happening?
Withum, a top-20 accounting firm headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey, has completed the acquisition of Farber Hass Hurley (FHH), a Los Angeles-based accountancy. The acquisition became effective on September 1. Farber Hass Hurley, established in 1990,
comprises three partners and approximately 30 team members. The firm specializes in providing assurance, tax, and advisory services to a diverse client base, including those in industrial and consumer products, media and entertainment, life sciences, technology, construction, and non-profit sectors. This strategic move by Withum aims to bolster its presence on the West Coast and specifically within the significant Los Angeles market. Pat Walsh, managing partner and CEO of Withum, emphasized that FHH's strong assurance practice, client-focused approach, and talented team will add meaningful depth to Withum's operations.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition is significant for Withum as it represents a strategic expansion into a key U.S. market, Los Angeles, which is a hub for various industries including media, technology, and life sciences. By integrating Farber Hass Hurley, Withum enhances its service capabilities and client portfolio, particularly in sectors where FHH has established expertise. For the U.S. accounting and consulting industry, this move reflects a broader trend of consolidation and growth among larger firms seeking to expand their geographical reach and specialized offerings. The acquisition allows Withum to offer broader capabilities, deeper expertise, and expanded resources to clients, as noted by Michel Abedian, partner-in-charge of Farber Hass Hurley. This expansion can lead to increased competition within the consulting sector, potentially benefiting clients through more comprehensive service options and specialized knowledge.
What's Next?
Following the acquisition, Withum will focus on integrating Farber Hass Hurley's operations and personnel into its existing structure. This will involve aligning service delivery, client management, and internal processes to ensure a seamless transition. The combined entity is expected to leverage FHH's established client relationships and industry expertise to further grow its market share in Los Angeles and across the West Coast. Withum's continued growth strategy, as evidenced by this acquisition and its previous acquisition of Freed Maxick, suggests that the firm will likely continue to seek opportunities for expansion, both organically and through further mergers and acquisitions. The firm's goal will be to enhance its position as a leading accounting and consulting firm by offering a wider range of services and strengthening its presence in key economic regions.
Beyond the Headlines
The acquisition of Farber Hass Hurley by Withum highlights the evolving landscape of the professional services industry, where firms are increasingly seeking to offer integrated solutions across diverse sectors. This trend is driven by clients' demands for comprehensive services that address complex business challenges, from assurance and tax to specialized advisory. The focus on expanding into strategically important markets like Los Angeles also reflects the regionalization of economic growth and the need for firms to have a strong local presence to effectively serve clients. Furthermore, the emphasis on 'relationship-driven experience' underscores the enduring importance of client trust and personalized service in a highly competitive industry. This consolidation could also lead to a more concentrated market, where larger firms with extensive resources and specialized expertise dominate, potentially impacting smaller, independent firms.
