What's Happening?
Amazon MGM Studios is currently developing an animated feature film based on "Game of Pets," a new children’s book series by Aaron Blabey, the creator behind DreamWorks Animation’s "The Bad Guys" films and Netflix’s "Thelma the Unicorn." The adaptation
will be produced by Rideback and Foundation Media Partners. Jonathan Eirich and Michael LoFaso of Rideback, along with Patrick Hughes of Foundation Media, will serve as producers, while Blabey and Rideback’s Nick Reynolds will be executive producers. The "Game of Pets" series centers on Griff, an 11-year-old boy with allergies, who discovers that household pets are secretly animal overlords involved in an intergalactic game show, making him humanity’s last hope. The first book in the series, "The Boy Who Knew Too Much," was published by Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant for Amazon MGM Studios as it expands its portfolio of animated content with a property from a proven children's author. Aaron Blabey's previous successes with "The Bad Guys" and "Thelma the Unicorn" indicate a strong potential for "Game of Pets" to resonate with young audiences and achieve commercial success. For the animation industry, it underscores the continued demand for original, high-quality animated films, particularly those based on popular children's literature. The involvement of established production companies like Rideback, known for its work on Disney's live-action adaptations, and Foundation Media, which has a history with Blabey's IPs, suggests a commitment to a high standard of production. This project could further solidify Amazon MGM's position as a key player in the competitive animated film market, attracting talent and audiences alike.
What's Next?
The project is currently in the development phase, meaning the next steps will involve scriptwriting, character design, and securing a director and voice cast. Given the success of Blabey's previous adaptations, there will likely be considerable anticipation for further announcements regarding the film's production timeline and release strategy. The collaboration between Amazon MGM, Rideback, and Foundation Media could lead to a long-term partnership for future adaptations of Blabey's works or other children's literature. The success of "Game of Pets" will also be a key indicator of Amazon MGM's strategy in the animated feature space, potentially influencing its investment in similar projects moving forward.
Beyond the Headlines
The adaptation of "Game of Pets" highlights a broader trend in the entertainment industry: the continuous search for compelling intellectual property, especially from successful children's authors, to fuel content pipelines across various platforms. This project demonstrates the value placed on established literary works as foundations for animated films, offering built-in fanbases and narrative structures. It also reflects the increasing competition among streaming services and studios to produce original, family-friendly content that can capture and retain audiences. The themes within "Game of Pets"—such as a child discovering a secret world and becoming humanity's hope—tap into universal narratives that resonate with children, offering a blend of adventure, humor, and fantasy. This strategic investment in proven storytelling could shape future trends in animated film development, emphasizing character-driven narratives and imaginative world-building.
