Tesla has initiated a recall of over 20,349 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles due to low-beam headlights that exceed the maximum brightness allowed by regulations. The recall affects 18,735 Model Y vehicles from
2020-2023 and 1,614 Model 3s from 2017-2023. The headlights, supplied by Marelli Automotive Lighting, were found to be as bright as 230.1 candela, surpassing the 125 candela limit. This issue was identified during routine testing by a Canadian lab in 2023. Tesla initially petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to avoid a full recall, citing no accidents or injuries caused by the headlights, but the petition was denied.
