Bluecore Energy, a startup focused on maritime nuclear energy, has raised $10 million in a pre-seed funding round. The company, founded by former Uber Freight employee Kofi Asante, aims to develop small modular reactors (SMRs) on floating barges. These
reactors are designed to provide clean energy to seaports and coastal infrastructure. The technology utilizes classic water-cooled nuclear systems, which have been in use for over 70 years, to generate electricity by heating water and using the resulting steam to power a turbine. The reactors are housed in a multi-layered safety system, including a thick steel pressure vessel and concrete shielding. The funding will be used to test the technology and launch initial prototypes, with the goal of powering approximately 15,000 homes or a major port.
