Dispersed camping, offering free and primitive sites without amenities, has seen a significant surge in popularity within the Canyon Lakes Ranger District of the Roosevelt National Forest. Reghan Cloudman, spokesperson for the Roosevelt National Forest,
noted that this increase is partly due to traditional campgrounds filling up quickly and campers seeking more spontaneous, remote experiences. The district, which manages approximately 20 campgrounds often requiring advance reservations, has observed a growing number of visitors opting for dispersed sites along roads such as Long Draw, Peterson Lake, Manhattan, Deadman, Crown Point, and Laramie River roads, as well as the road to Soule Park. These sites typically lack restrooms, water, picnic tables, and trash services, and often have limited cell service. Some locations may also require four-wheel drive access and are not suitable for camper trailers. Due to the heightened demand, the district has begun designating specific dispersed campsites along popular routes.
