What's Happening?
Fi has released the Ultra collar, a new pet tracking device that utilizes Starlink satellite technology to provide location updates even in areas without traditional cell coverage. The collar integrates T-Satellite, T-Mobile's satellite service, to maintain
connectivity in remote locations, switching back to LTE when available to conserve battery life. The Ultra collar offers real-time location updates, a location history feature, and a callback mode using sound and vibration. Despite its advanced capabilities, the collar's battery life is limited to just over two days, requiring frequent recharging. The product is priced at $199 with additional fees for activation and an annual membership, making it a high-end option in the pet tracking market.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of the Fi Ultra collar marks a significant development in pet tracking technology, particularly for pet owners who frequently venture into remote areas. By leveraging Starlink's satellite network, the collar ensures continuous tracking capabilities, addressing a common limitation of traditional GPS collars that rely solely on cellular networks. This innovation could set a new standard for pet safety and tracking, especially for outdoor enthusiasts. However, the high cost of the device and its associated fees may limit its accessibility to a broader audience. The product's success could prompt further advancements in satellite-based consumer technology, potentially expanding its applications beyond pet tracking.
