What's Happening?
Vinamra Mishra, Joint Secretary at India's Ministry of MSME, emphasized the importance of resource efficiency and clean energy adoption for the decarbonization of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Speaking at the Economic Times India Net Zero
Forum, Mishra highlighted the challenges MSMEs face, including limited access to finance and low awareness of green technologies. He noted that MSMEs contribute significantly to emissions, primarily from electricity and fossil-fuel-based power. The sector's transition to sustainability is hindered by financial constraints and a focus on short-term production targets. Mishra called for customized solutions and collaboration between government, industry, and financial institutions to support MSMEs in adopting sustainable practices.
Why It's Important?
MSMEs play a crucial role in India's economy, contributing to manufacturing, exports, and employment. Their transition to sustainable practices is essential for achieving India's net-zero targets. By adopting clean energy and resource-efficient technologies, MSMEs can reduce their carbon footprint, improve competitiveness, and meet emerging compliance requirements. The shift towards sustainability can also open new market opportunities, particularly in export markets with stringent green regulations. However, the financial and operational challenges faced by MSMEs require targeted support and innovative financing models to facilitate their transition.
What's Next?
The Ministry of MSME is working on creating an enabling environment for MSME greening, including reviewing technology upgradation and sustainability schemes. The government is exploring models like demand aggregation and group captive solar to provide MSMEs with access to green technologies without upfront costs. Additionally, carbon accounting and the development of a carbon market could offer MSMEs new opportunities for financing and growth. Collaboration between stakeholders will be key to developing effective solutions and ensuring the sector's sustainable transformation.
