What's Happening?
U.S. Representative Julia Letlow participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for Blue Point One, a new low-carbon ammonia plant located in Modeste, Louisiana. This project is a collaborative effort between CF Industries Holdings, Inc., JERA Co., Inc., and
Mitsui & Co., Ltd. The facility is designed to be the world's largest ammonia plant upon completion, with an anticipated production capacity of 1.4 million metric tons per year. The event also saw the attendance of U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Stephen Vaden, Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works) Adam Telle, and various senior Louisiana state and local officials. The plant is expected to begin operations in 2029 and will utilize autothermal reforming (ATR) production technology, aiming to capture and permanently sequester 98% of its CO2 emissions.
Why It's Important?
This project represents a significant investment of $3.7 billion by the joint venture members, with CF Industries holding 40% ownership, JERA 35%, and Mitsui 25%. The plant is projected to create over 100 high-paying manufacturing jobs once operational, in addition to an estimated 3,900 construction jobs over four years. Beyond job creation, the facility is poised to strengthen the domestic supply of nitrogen fertilizer for American farmers and enhance the nation's capacity to export critical products. The use of advanced technology to achieve a low-carbon footprint positions the U.S. as a leader in sustainable industrial practices, contributing to both economic growth and environmental goals. The project also highlights international collaboration in energy transition, bringing together American, Japanese, and global companies.
What's Next?
The Blue Point One plant is scheduled to become operational in 2029. In the interim, CF Industries is investing an additional $550 million in shared, scalable infrastructure to support future ammonia production and fertilizer upgrades. Linde will also invest over $400 million in an on-site air-separation unit to supply necessary gases to the plant. A joint venture between 1PointFive, a subsidiary of Occidental, and Enbridge, Inc., will manage the transportation and permanent sequestration of carbon dioxide from the plant. This ongoing development phase will involve significant construction and infrastructure work, leading up to the plant's full operational status and its contribution to the low-carbon ammonia value chain.
