What's Happening?
Delta Air Lines has announced a change in its partnership with Starbucks, simplifying the way SkyMiles members earn miles. Starting August 5, 2026, members will earn 1 mile per $1 spent at participating Starbucks locations, a return to the original formula
used when the partnership began in 2022. Previously, members had to reload their Starbucks cards in increments of at least $25 to earn miles, with varying mile rewards based on the amount reloaded. This change aims to make the process more straightforward, allowing any purchase amount to contribute to earning miles. The partnership has seen significant growth, with 4 million Delta customers linking their SkyMiles accounts to Starbucks. Delta also serves Starbucks coffee in its Sky Clubs and on its flights.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant for Delta Air Lines and its customers as it enhances the value of the SkyMiles program, potentially increasing customer loyalty and engagement. By simplifying the earning process, Delta makes it easier for customers to accumulate miles, which could lead to increased spending at Starbucks and more frequent use of Delta's services. This move could also strengthen the partnership between Delta and Starbucks, benefiting both companies through increased customer interaction and brand loyalty. For consumers, the change offers a more accessible way to earn travel rewards, which could influence their choice of airline and coffee shop.
What's Next?
As the new earning structure takes effect, Delta and Starbucks may monitor customer feedback and engagement to assess the impact of the change. They might consider further enhancements to the partnership or additional promotions to attract more customers. The success of this initiative could lead to similar strategies by other airlines and retail partners, aiming to simplify and enhance loyalty programs. Additionally, Delta may explore expanding its partnership with Starbucks or other brands to offer more diverse rewards to its customers.
