New research from institutions in India and Spain, published in Social Science & Medicine, suggests that individuals are more successful at reducing their smartphone screen time when they set their own reduction goals. A 35-day experiment involving 149
volunteers divided into three groups demonstrated this finding. One group chose their own screen time reduction goals (10%, 20%, or 30%), another was assigned a 14% reduction target, and a control group had no specific goals but was monitored. The group that self-selected their goals reduced their screen time by an average of 49 minutes per day, significantly more than the 23 minutes achieved by those with assigned targets. The self-selected group also met their daily targets 11% more often. These reductions persisted into a 28-day post-intervention period, with the self-selected group maintaining a 16-minute daily reduction compared to baseline, while the assigned group maintained an 11-minute reduction. The control group's usage, in contrast, increased by 2 minutes.
