What's Happening?
Hindustan Copper Ltd (HCL), a state-run company in India, plans to invest over ₹7,000 crore (approximately $840 million USD) over the next five to six years. This significant capital expenditure aims to expand mineral exploration, reopen closed mines,
increase capacity, and forge strategic international alliances. The announcement, reported by Economic Times, signals a fundamental shift in India's domestic copper supply chain. HCL has acquired 135.52 million tonnes of copper ore reserves in the past three years, bringing its total combined resource and reserve to 767.37 million tonnes, making it one of Asia's largest copper resource bases. The investment will cover greenfield exploration, revival of historical mines like Khetri in Rajasthan, capacity expansion at flagship operations such as Malanjkhand in Madhya Pradesh, and overseas acquisitions, including a partnership with Chile’s CODELCO. HCL has also signed Memorandums of Understanding with other public sector undertakings like RITES, Indian Oil Corporation, Coal India, Oil India, and GAIL to extend its mining reach.
