What's Happening?
The TUI Care Foundation, in partnership with Futouris and BIO AUSTRIA, has launched the 'TUI Field to Fork Austria' program. This initiative, supported by the State of Tyrol and the Institute for Tourism Sustainability, aims to integrate regenerative
agriculture into the region's tourism economy. Over the next two years, the program will provide intensive support to approximately 25 farms in the Tyrolean lowlands and Innsbruck region to adopt regenerative agricultural practices. These methods focus on improving soil health, supporting soil biology, and protecting against erosion, with the goal of enhancing farm-level biodiversity and resilience to weather-related pressures. Additionally, at least eight hotels and gastronomy businesses will be supported in incorporating regeneratively produced food into their offerings, and 200 tourism and food-service professionals will be engaged through training and awareness activities. The program also seeks to create new visitor experiences, such as farm visits and culinary workshops, to connect tourists with local agriculture.
Why It's Important?
This program is important as it addresses the critical challenges faced by agriculture in Tyrol, where 80% of agricultural land is in mountainous areas, leading to higher production costs and labor intensity. Climate change further exacerbates these issues through increasingly frequent extreme weather events. By promoting regenerative agriculture, the initiative aims to build resilience within the farming community and ensure the long-term viability of agricultural businesses, which are crucial for maintaining the landscapes, biodiversity, and food culture that attract tourists. Strengthening regional food value chains through partnerships between farmers, food producers, hotels, and restaurants will create more reliable local supply chains and increase market opportunities for locally produced food. This integrated approach fosters sustainable tourism by offering visitors authentic experiences while supporting local economies and environmental protection.
What's Next?
Over the next two years, the 'TUI Field to Fork Austria' program will track the progress of the participating farms in adopting regenerative agricultural practices. The initiative will continue to provide intensive training and technical support to around 25 grassland and arable farms, with a broader reach of approximately 145 people from agriculture and food production through training and awareness activities. The program will also focus on supporting at least eight hotels and gastronomy businesses to integrate regeneratively produced food into their purchasing and culinary offers, engaging 200 tourism and food-service professionals. Furthermore, farmers, chefs, tourism organizations, and local partners will collaborate to develop new visitor experiences, such as farm visits, farm-to-table offers, tastings, and cooking workshops, to connect holidaymakers with Tyrolean agriculture and local food production. The State of Tyrol will continue its support through its agriculture, tourism, and regional development departments.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'TUI Field to Fork Austria' program represents a broader shift towards integrating sustainability and local sourcing within the global tourism industry. By connecting regenerative agriculture directly with tourism, it highlights the potential for symbiotic relationships between seemingly disparate sectors. This initiative not only addresses environmental concerns like soil health and biodiversity but also aims to preserve cultural heritage through local food traditions and landscapes. The emphasis on creating new income opportunities for farmers and local producers, and building resilience against climate change, underscores a holistic approach to sustainable development. This model could serve as a blueprint for other regions globally, demonstrating how tourism can be a catalyst for positive environmental and economic change, fostering a deeper connection between visitors and the local environment and culture.
