What's Happening?
Emma Zavala has joined Tufts University's athletics department as the new Civic Engagement Administrator for Athletics. In this role, Zavala will collaborate with the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life to enhance civic life for student-athletes by
creating opportunities for connection and engagement. She will also be responsible for building and expanding the Civic Life Ambassadors program, a year-long leadership and civic engagement initiative designed for Tufts student-athletes passionate about public service, community engagement, and translating leadership skills from athletics into meaningful civic action. Zavala brings experience from Harvard University, where she designed and administered health and wellness programming for community outreach. She is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of San Diego and holds a Master's degree from Harvard University Graduate School of Education.
Why It's Important?
This appointment is significant because it formalizes and strengthens the integration of civic engagement within collegiate athletics. By creating a dedicated role, Tufts University is emphasizing the importance of developing well-rounded student-athletes who are not only successful in their sports but also active and responsible citizens. The Civic Life Ambassadors program, under Zavala's leadership, will provide structured opportunities for student-athletes to apply their leadership, teamwork, and discipline—qualities honed in athletics—to address community needs and engage in public service. This initiative can serve as a model for other universities, demonstrating how athletic programs can contribute to broader civic education goals and foster a sense of social responsibility among young leaders, ultimately benefiting both the university and the wider community.
What's Next?
Emma Zavala will immediately begin working to strengthen civic life for Tufts student-athletes. Her primary tasks will include identifying and creating new opportunities for civic connection and engagement tailored to student-athletes' schedules and interests. A key focus will be the expansion and enhancement of the Civic Life Ambassadors program, which aims to develop student-athletes' leadership and civic engagement skills over a year-long period. This will involve recruiting new ambassadors, designing relevant public service projects, and facilitating community engagement initiatives. Zavala's background in health and wellness programming suggests a potential for integrating these aspects into civic engagement efforts, further enriching the student-athlete experience and community impact.
Beyond the Headlines
The deeper implication of this role is the recognition that athletic prowess and academic achievement alone are insufficient for producing fully engaged citizens. By intentionally fostering civic engagement among student-athletes, Tufts University is promoting a holistic development model that prepares individuals for leadership roles beyond the playing field. This initiative challenges the traditional perception of collegiate athletics as solely focused on competition, instead highlighting its potential as a powerful platform for social impact and community building. It suggests a growing trend in higher education to integrate civic responsibility into all aspects of student life, ensuring that graduates are not only skilled professionals but also active contributors to a democratic society. This can lead to a generation of leaders who are both competitive and civically conscious.
