What's Happening?
The Book Industry Study Group (BISG) is marking its 50th anniversary with the appointment of a new executive director, Allison Belan. Belan, who previously served as director of strategic innovation and services at Duke University Press, succeeds Brian
O’Leary, who retired after a decade of leadership. Belan aims to maintain continuity while driving change, focusing on standardizing production methods to enhance efficiency in publishing. She plans to build on existing BISG programs to create an 'early warning system' for potential supply chain issues, such as tariffs and international regulations. Additionally, Belan is keen on addressing the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the publishing industry, having initiated a second industry AI survey in collaboration with BookNet Canada.
Why It's Important?
Belan's leadership comes at a critical time for the publishing industry, which is grappling with rapid technological advancements and global supply chain challenges. Her focus on standardizing production methods could streamline operations, allowing publishers to explore new opportunities. The emphasis on AI reflects a broader industry trend towards digital transformation, with potential implications for content creation, distribution, and consumption. By proactively addressing supply chain issues, BISG aims to mitigate disruptions that could affect the availability and pricing of books, ultimately impacting publishers, retailers, and consumers.
What's Next?
BISG will celebrate its milestones at the Book Publishing Next Forum, followed by a gala reception in New York. Belan plans to engage with industry members to gather insights and foster collaboration. The results of the AI survey, expected this fall, will inform BISG's approach to integrating AI into publishing. Belan's initiatives could lead to new industry standards and best practices, positioning BISG as a key player in navigating the future of publishing.
