Kia America, as part of the Hyundai Motor Group, is focusing on utilizing its extensive global vehicle fleet to gather data essential for training autonomous driving technology. The Hyundai Motor Group, which includes Kia, aims to significantly increase
its accumulated driving data, with a target to surpass competitors by 2033. This strategy, referred to as a 'data flywheel,' involves collecting data from vehicles, using it to train and validate artificial intelligence models, and then deploying improved models back into vehicles to gather new data. The group sells over 7 million vehicles annually across approximately 190 countries, providing a vast environment for real-world data collection once self-driving systems are installed. This initiative was unveiled at an Autonomous Driving Media Day held at the headquarters of 42dot in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, where key figures in the group's self-driving efforts were present.

This strategic push by Kia America and Hyundai Motor Group is crucial for the advancement of autonomous driving technology in the U.S. and globally. By standardizing sensor specifications through a 'data union' framework, specifically using Nvidia Hyperion 10, data can be seamlessly shared across Hyundai Motor, Kia, 42dot, and Motional, their U.S. robotaxi joint venture. This standardization is vital because these entities currently operate on different sensor specifications, hindering efficient data aggregation. The ability to rapidly collect and process real-world driving data from millions of vehicles will allow the group to accelerate the development and refinement of its AI models, potentially closing the self-driving technology gap with leading competitors. This could lead to safer and more reliable autonomous vehicles on U.S. roads, impacting transportation, logistics, and consumer mobility. What's Next?
Hyundai Motor Group plans to implement Level 2+ self-driving functions, based on Nvidia solutions, into mass-produced vehicles by the first half of 2028. Following this, Level 2++ capabilities are expected to be launched in the second half of the same year. The group intends to expand this technology in stages, with mass production of Level 2++ based on its proprietary self-driving platform, Atria AI, scheduled for the second half of 2029. By 2027, the goal is to achieve a high level of completeness for various functions, including driving, parking, and active safety. The period of 2028 will focus on gathering extensive 'edge-case' data—exceptional driving situations—to ensure product safety, with 2029 dedicated to preparing for safety certification in North America and Europe, in addition to Korea. The group is also deploying autonomous SDV pace cars in Gwangju, Jeolla Province, from the end of this year to test performance and stability on domestic roads.
