A recent survey underscores the growing importance of soft skills such as emotional intelligence and collaboration in the legal profession, particularly as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more prevalent. The BARBRI-sponsored report, titled 'Envisioning
Success: The 2026 Career Aspirations Survey,' gathered insights from over 300 law students, associates, partners, and law firm staff. It revealed that a significant majority—77% of law students, 75% of associates, and 58% of partners—believe AI has heightened the need for soft skills in professional advancement. Despite this recognition, many respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the support they receive in developing these skills. Specifically, 52% of students rated their school's efforts as 'fair' or 'poor,' while 46% of associates felt similarly about their firms' initiatives.
