What's Happening?
The Memphis Grizzlies have announced a multi-year agreement with DAZN, making the sports streaming platform their exclusive local broadcast partner starting with the 2026–27 NBA season. This partnership marks a significant shift towards streaming-led
local broadcasts for the team. Under the new deal, DAZN will broadcast 78 of the Grizzlies’ 80 announced regular-season games, along with all four preseason fixtures, across the franchise’s seven-state Mid-South broadcast territory. Fans outside this region will continue to access games via NBA League Pass. The agreement also includes a broader digital offering, featuring highlights, condensed games, on-demand programming, Grind City Media content, and select Memphis Hustle games. Additionally, 15 regular-season games and all four preseason games will be available free-to-view through the DAZN app and a local over-the-air television partner, representing the highest number of free Grizzlies games since the team relocated to Memphis in 2001.
Why It's Important?
This partnership is crucial for both the Memphis Grizzlies and DAZN, reflecting a growing trend in sports broadcasting away from traditional regional sports networks (RSNs). For the Grizzlies, it provides a modern, streaming-first approach to reach fans, especially as the RSN model faces increasing challenges. The deal aims to enhance the fan experience by offering flexible, personalized, and interactive viewing options, including multi-view and alternative broadcasts. For DAZN, this agreement further solidifies its expansion strategy in the U.S. regional sports market, following similar partnerships with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Indiana Pacers. This move allows DAZN to strengthen its distribution and technological capabilities, positioning itself as a key player in the evolving landscape of sports media consumption. The increased availability of free games also aims to broaden the team's reach and engagement within its local market.
What's Next?
The partnership between the Memphis Grizzlies and DAZN will commence with the 2026–27 NBA season, bringing a new era of sports broadcasting to Grizzlies fans. DAZN will begin offering its comprehensive digital proposition, including live games, on-demand content, and enhanced viewing features. The collaboration is also expected to extend beyond basketball, with plans for a professional boxing event in Memphis in 2027, indicating a broader strategic alliance. Other NBA teams and sports franchises will likely observe the success of this streaming-led model as they navigate their own broadcasting futures, potentially leading to more such partnerships across the league. The shift could also influence how other sports leagues approach local media rights in an increasingly digital-first media environment.
Beyond the Headlines
This agreement highlights a significant disruption in the traditional sports media landscape, driven by changing consumer habits and technological advancements. The decline of traditional cable television and the rise of streaming services are forcing sports organizations to rethink how they deliver content to their audiences. This move by the Grizzlies and DAZN could accelerate the fragmentation of sports broadcasting rights, leading to more direct-to-consumer offerings and potentially altering the revenue streams for teams and leagues. It also raises questions about accessibility for fans who may not have reliable internet access or prefer traditional viewing methods. The emphasis on free-to-view games suggests an effort to balance premium subscription content with broader community engagement, a strategy that could become more prevalent as sports entities seek to maintain and grow their fan bases in a competitive media environment.
