What's Happening?
The Omaha Public Library is providing free access to New York Times Cooking for its cardholders. This initiative allows patrons to access a vast collection of recipes, along with other New York Times features like news, games, and crosswords. Each access code
grants 24 hours of use, and users can obtain new codes as needed. Courtni Kopietz, marketing manager for Omaha Public Library, suggests using this feature to batch recipe searches and save desired recipes as PDFs. In addition to this digital offering, the library is hosting a food writing workshop for children aged 8 to 12. This workshop, led by Zedeka Poindexter, executive director of Nebraska Writers Collective, aims to help children explore the connections between food, memory, identity, and storytelling. Participants are encouraged to bring a family recipe or a favorite dish to the session, which is scheduled for November 5th at the A.V. Sorensen Branch. Registration is required, and the workshop is capped at 15 participants to ensure personalized attention.
Why It's Important?
This initiative by the Omaha Public Library highlights the evolving role of public libraries in providing diverse educational and recreational resources beyond traditional books. Offering free access to premium digital content like New York Times Cooking democratizes access to high-quality culinary information, which can benefit individuals and families by fostering cooking skills, promoting healthy eating, and encouraging cultural exploration through food. The food writing workshop for children is particularly significant as it combines literacy development with cultural and personal expression. By encouraging young participants to connect food with memory and identity, the program nurtures creativity, storytelling abilities, and a deeper appreciation for their heritage. This type of community programming can have a lasting impact on children's development, fostering a love for writing and an understanding of the cultural significance of food, which are valuable skills in an increasingly interconnected society.
What's Next?
The free access to New York Times Cooking is an ongoing benefit for Omaha Public Library cardholders, allowing continuous engagement with culinary resources. The food writing workshop for kids is scheduled for November 5th at the A.V. Sorensen Branch, and interested participants are advised to register by calling the branch due to limited capacity. The success of such programs could lead to the development of similar workshops or expanded digital offerings in the future, potentially inspiring other libraries to adopt comparable initiatives. The library's continued collaboration with organizations like the Nebraska Writers Collective suggests a commitment to providing diverse and enriching community programs. Patrons can also anticipate more 'Off the Shelf' segments on KIOS Omaha Public Radio, which regularly highlight library resources and literary discussions.
