What's Happening?
Teams from A.T. Still University-Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ATSU-ASDOH) participated in the Smart Scramble Annual Golf Tournament held on April 17 at McCormick Ranch in Scottsdale, Arizona. The event was organized to raise funds for Give
Kids A Smile, a charitable initiative. For the first time, the tournament sponsor, SmartPractice, introduced a friendly competition between ATSU and Midwestern University. ATSU emerged victorious in this new challenge, securing the trophy which will be housed at ATSU-ASDOH for the year. The winning ATSU-ASDOH team, which also placed second overall in the tournament, consisted of second-year dental students Shane Byun, Chad Gidel, Wes Nomi, and Andrew Shelby. Chad Gidel also won the men’s longest drive award in the afternoon session.
Why It's Important?
This victory for ATSU-ASDOH extends beyond just a golf tournament win; it represents a successful community engagement effort and a positive outcome for a charitable cause. The funds raised for Give Kids A Smile directly support providing dental care to underserved children, highlighting the dental school's commitment to public health and community service. The friendly rivalry with Midwestern University also fosters a spirit of camaraderie and healthy competition within the academic dental community in Arizona. Such events not only raise crucial funds but also provide networking opportunities for students and staff, enhancing the university's reputation and its connection to local philanthropic endeavors. It underscores the role of academic institutions in contributing to broader societal well-being.
What's Next?
The trophy will remain at ATSU-ASDOH until next year's Smart Scramble Annual Golf Tournament, where it will be contested again. The winning university in the subsequent tournament will then take possession of the trophy. This establishes a new tradition of inter-university competition, likely encouraging continued participation and engagement from both ATSU and Midwestern University. ATSU-ASDOH will likely continue its involvement in community outreach and fundraising events like this, reinforcing its commitment to dental public health and local charitable causes. The success of this year's event may also inspire other academic departments or student groups to participate in similar community-focused initiatives.
Beyond the Headlines
The participation and success of ATSU-ASDOH in this charity golf tournament subtly highlight the broader concept of corporate social responsibility within academic and professional institutions. By engaging in events that benefit organizations like Give Kids A Smile, universities demonstrate their commitment to community welfare beyond their primary educational and research missions. This involvement can also serve as a valuable learning experience for students, instilling in them the importance of philanthropy and professional responsibility. Furthermore, such events can strengthen inter-institutional relationships and foster a collaborative spirit within the healthcare education sector, ultimately benefiting the wider community through shared goals and collective action.
