What's Happening?
DAZN, a London-based streaming platform, is reportedly close to acquiring exclusive local broadcast rights for several NBA teams, including the Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers, Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs, and Memphis Grizzlies. This
move comes after the collapse of Main Street Sports Group, which previously held these rights. DAZN is also negotiating streaming-only deals with the Orlando Magic and possibly the Charlotte Hornets. The acquisition will allow DAZN to overtake the Gotham Sports app, a joint venture between YES Network and MSG Networks, which currently provides local broadcasts for several New York-area sports teams.
Why It's Important?
This development marks a significant shift in the distribution of local NBA broadcasts, potentially altering the landscape of sports media in the U.S. By securing these rights, DAZN positions itself as a major player in the sports streaming market, challenging established networks like ESPN and YouTube. The move could lead to increased competition and innovation in how sports content is delivered to fans, potentially benefiting consumers with more viewing options and possibly lower costs. Teams involved in these deals may also benefit financially from DAZN's revenue-sharing model and minimum guarantees.
What's Next?
DAZN's agreements are expected to be short-term, with options for teams to opt out if DAZN fails to meet performance metrics. This flexibility allows teams to potentially join the NBA's planned centralized local streaming hub in the future. DAZN's success in this venture could influence other sports leagues and teams to consider similar streaming partnerships, further transforming the sports broadcasting industry.
