A collaborative research team from UCLA Samueli School of Engineering and Ewha Womans University in Seoul has developed a novel method for recycling plastics that eliminates the need for sorting. By using a single reactor with sodium hydroxide, the team successfully
converted mixed plastics into hydrogen gas with over 90% purity. This process, known as alkaline thermal treatment (ATT), operates at lower temperatures and atmospheric pressure, making it more efficient than conventional methods. The carbon from the plastics is captured as solid sodium carbonate, reducing emissions.
