What's Happening?
Galleri5 AI Studio, a division of Collective Artists Network, recently hosted NXTinAI in Hyderabad, India, bringing together filmmakers, producers, creators, and technology leaders. The event showcased advanced AI technology designed to transition AI-native
storytelling from experimental projects and television to professional, long-form, and theatrical cinema. Galleri5's technology stack has already powered 'Mahabharat: Ek Dharmayudh' for Star Plus and JioHotstar, bringing AI-native storytelling to mainstream television. They are also developing 'Chiranjeevi Hanuman' with Star Studio18, a full-length AI feature intended for theatrical release, with a teaser already shown in cinemas. NXTinAI demonstrated capabilities such as 4K cinematic output, AI-powered VFX, AI actors and avatars, consistent characters and worlds, live-action-to-AI workflows, agentic filmmaking, and production pipelines for long-form entertainment.
Why It's Important?
This development signifies a major shift in the entertainment industry, particularly in filmmaking. By enabling AI to handle complex tasks like 4K cinematic output, VFX, and consistent character generation, Galleri5 is lowering the barrier to entry for creators and potentially revolutionizing production workflows. This could lead to more efficient and cost-effective film production, allowing for greater creative freedom and the realization of ambitious cinematic visions that might otherwise be financially or logistically prohibitive. The integration of AI actors and avatars also raises questions about the future of human talent in film and the ethical implications of synthetic performances. India's emergence as a leader in this technology could position it as a global hub for AI-driven filmmaking, attracting investment and talent.
What's Next?
Galleri5 aims to continue building the technology required for full-length cinematic production at scale, focusing on challenges such as 4K resolution, advanced VFX, consistent characters, and agentic production. The company plans to further integrate AI into every stage of the filmmaking process, from script to post-production, with the goal of making AI a seamless part of cinematic creation. The Galleri5 AI Experience Centre will remain a hub for filmmakers and creators to interact directly with the technology. This ongoing development suggests a future where AI plays an increasingly central role in shaping the visual and narrative aspects of films, potentially leading to new genres and storytelling techniques.
Beyond the Headlines
The move of AI into theatrical filmmaking presents profound implications for the art and business of cinema. Ethically, the use of AI actors and avatars could spark debates about authenticity, intellectual property, and the future of human employment in the creative industries. Legally, questions around copyright for AI-generated content and the rights of synthetic performers will need to be addressed. Culturally, AI's ability to create consistent characters and worlds could lead to new forms of immersive storytelling, but also risks homogenizing creative output if not carefully managed. This technological shift could democratize filmmaking by making advanced tools more accessible, but it also necessitates a re-evaluation of traditional filmmaking practices and the very definition of cinematic art.
