What's Happening?
Brimstone and Century Aluminum have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to create a domestic 'mine to metal' supply chain for primary aluminium production in the United States. This agreement involves Brimstone supplying Century with significant
quantities of alumina from its planned production facility. The partnership aims to strengthen national security by establishing a reliable aluminium supply chain rooted in US-based resources. Currently, US aluminium producers rely heavily on imported bauxite, leaving the industry vulnerable to international supply disruptions. Brimstone's upcoming demonstration plant in Reno, Nevada, is set to begin operations in 2028, with an industrial-scale plant expected by 2034.
Why It's Important?
The MoU between Brimstone and Century Aluminum is a strategic move to reduce the US aluminium industry's dependence on foreign imports, particularly from China, which dominates global alumina production. By establishing a domestic supply chain, the partnership seeks to enhance supply chain resilience and national security. This development is crucial as the US currently produces less than one-sixth of the aluminium it consumes, making it susceptible to global market fluctuations. The initiative could also stimulate economic growth by creating jobs and fostering technological advancements in the aluminium sector.
What's Next?
Brimstone plans to commence operations at its demonstration plant in Reno, Nevada, by 2028, with the first industrial-scale plant targeted for completion by 2034. This facility is expected to produce around 350,000 tonnes of smelter-grade alumina annually. Century Aluminum is also advancing its joint venture with Emirates Global Aluminum to construct a primary production plant in Inola, Oklahoma. These developments are likely to attract further investments and partnerships, potentially reshaping the US aluminium industry's landscape. Stakeholders will closely monitor the progress of these projects and their impact on domestic production capabilities.
