Pepper Keenan, guitarist for Corrosion of Conformity, shared his experience of auditioning for Metallica in the early 1990s. This opportunity arose when James Hetfield suffered second-degree burns during a tour with Guns N' Roses, prompting Metallica to seek
a temporary replacement. Keenan was contacted by Metallica's management and flew to Denver to audition. Despite the high stakes, as the band faced significant financial losses if the tour was canceled, Keenan suggested splitting the set with another guitarist. Ultimately, Metallica decided to reschedule some shows, and Hetfield returned with his guitar parts played by Kirk Hammett's tech, John Marshall.
