What's Happening?
As summer temperatures rise, gardeners face challenges in maintaining plant health during periods of drought. Experts from British Garden Centres suggest a variety of resilient plant species that can thrive in arid conditions. Julian Palphramand, head
of plants at the garden centre group, recommends Mediterranean plants such as lavender, rosemary, and succulents like sempervivums and aloes for their drought tolerance. These plants are known for their ability to withstand heat and require minimal water. Additionally, herbs like oregano and thyme are highlighted for their resilience and attractiveness to pollinators. The advice includes practical tips for plant care during holidays, such as moving potted herbs to semi-shaded areas to prevent water loss.
Why It's Important?
The guidance on drought-resistant plants is crucial as climate change leads to more frequent and severe droughts. By selecting plants that require less water, gardeners can maintain vibrant gardens while conserving water resources. This approach not only supports environmental sustainability but also ensures that gardens remain attractive and functional during dry spells. The emphasis on Mediterranean and succulent plants reflects a broader trend towards xeriscaping, a landscaping method that reduces or eliminates the need for irrigation. This shift is significant for urban planning and residential gardening, promoting water conservation and resilience against climate variability.
