What's Happening?
Lamont Leak, a Detroit native and casting producer for 'The Voice,' has opened Rent Free Haus, a new coffee shop and listening bar in Detroit's Eastern Market. Co-owned with Everett Moore, the establishment aims to be a community space celebrating Black
music and culture. Leak, who previously worked on shows like 'RuPaul’s Drag Race' and MTV's 'Wonderland' (co-hosted by Lizzo), returned to Detroit in 2023 after nearly a decade in Los Angeles, citing the rising cost of living in California and a desire to be closer to family. Rent Free Haus, located at 1347 E. Fisher Freeway, operates as a coffee shop by day and a listening bar at night, featuring local DJs and artists. The coffee shop portion is set to open on October 20, while the listening bar has already hosted events with Detroit artists. The venture received a $50,000 grant from Motor City Match in 2024, along with additional funding from the Detroit Development Fund, Invest Detroit, and ProsperUs Detroit.
Why It's Important?
The opening of Rent Free Haus signifies a growing trend of entertainment industry professionals investing in and returning to their hometowns, contributing to local economic development and cultural revitalization. Leak's move back to Detroit, driven by both personal and economic factors, highlights the increasing attractiveness of cities like Detroit for creative entrepreneurs. This establishment provides a unique 'third space' for community gathering, fostering creativity and cultural exchange, particularly within the Black music scene. The support from local grants and development funds underscores Detroit's commitment to nurturing small businesses and cultural initiatives. For the city, Rent Free Haus adds to the vibrant landscape of Eastern Market, drawing in residents and visitors and potentially creating new job opportunities. It also serves as an example of how individuals with national entertainment experience can bring valuable expertise and networks to local communities, enriching the cultural fabric.
What's Next?
As Rent Free Haus enters its first full month of operation, Lamont Leak plans to focus on developing its programming. This includes scheduled events such as Vinyl Nights on Wednesdays, live music sets called Haus Calls on Thursdays, local DJ showcases on Rotation Fridays, and additional artist features on Plastic Sofa Sundays. The coffee shop component is slated to open on October 20, which will complete the dual concept of the venue. Leak envisions Rent Free Haus becoming a staple for culture and music in Detroit, with aspirations for it to gain recognition beyond the city and potentially expand the brand in the future. The success of these initial programming efforts and the full launch of the coffee shop will be crucial in establishing Rent Free Haus as a prominent cultural hub in Eastern Market.
Beyond the Headlines
The establishment of Rent Free Haus reflects a broader cultural shift towards valuing authentic, community-driven spaces that blend entertainment with social interaction. In an increasingly digital world, physical venues that offer curated experiences, like a listening bar focused on Black music, provide essential platforms for connection and cultural preservation. Leak's journey from a production assistant to a casting producer on 'The Voice' and now a business owner in his hometown illustrates the entrepreneurial spirit within the entertainment industry and the potential for creative professionals to diversify their impact. The emphasis on Black ownership and Detroit roots, as highlighted by events manager Takeisha Pack, also speaks to the importance of representation and economic empowerment within local communities. This venture could inspire other creatives to invest in their local economies, fostering a decentralized and more diverse entertainment landscape.
