Oklo, a California-based advanced nuclear technology company, has successfully achieved first criticality at its Groves Isotope Test Reactor in Texas. This milestone was reached less than a year after the construction began, under the U.S. Department
of Energy’s Reactor Pilot Program. The Groves reactor, although a test facility and not a commercial power reactor, has established a controlled, self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction. This achievement provides Oklo with an operational platform to develop its planned isotope production business. The project was developed from a greenfield site on private land, with Oklo managing the engineering, construction, procurement, and startup preparation. The company manufactured or commercially procured all components, including fuel, and developed its operating programs in-house.
