What's Happening?
Kevin Wakefield, a seasoned real estate finance lawyer, has transitioned from Hunton Andrews Kurth to Jones Day, where he will serve as of counsel in the firm's Dallas office. Wakefield's practice will focus on commercial real estate finance and transactions,
representing institutional lenders in commercial mortgage and mezzanine loan originations. His role will also involve advising clients on commercial real estate acquisitions, dispositions, development, and leasing. Prior to this move, Wakefield spent nearly 13 years at Hunton Andrews Kurth, where he was promoted to counsel in 2024. During his tenure, he represented banks, insurance companies, and other institutional lenders in significant real estate finance transactions, including a $376 million mortgage loan secured by 20 industrial properties and a $395 million mortgage and mezzanine financing for a Silicon Valley office complex.
Why It's Important?
Wakefield's move to Jones Day is significant as it bolsters the firm's real estate finance capabilities in Dallas and across Texas. Dallas is increasingly becoming a hub for institutional real estate capital, and having a lawyer of Wakefield's caliber enhances Jones Day's ability to serve clients in this growing market. The firm's Dallas office, which recorded $183 million in revenue last year, stands to benefit from Wakefield's expertise in handling large-scale real estate finance transactions. This move reflects the competitive nature of the legal industry, where firms seek to attract top talent to strengthen their service offerings and expand their market presence.
What's Next?
With Wakefield's addition, Jones Day is likely to enhance its service offerings in the real estate finance sector, potentially attracting more institutional clients seeking expertise in complex transactions. The firm's strategic focus on expanding its capabilities in Dallas aligns with the city's growth as a real estate capital hub. As the market continues to evolve, Jones Day may pursue further talent acquisitions to solidify its position as a leader in real estate finance law.
