Decom Engineering, an Aberdeen-headquartered company, has secured nine new mooring chain projects in 2026, marking a significant expansion beyond its traditional decommissioning market. According to Michael O’Neill, Decom’s Head of Business Development,
two-thirds of these projects are installation campaigns, indicating a strategic shift. The company attributes this success to its proprietary tools, such as the C1-16UL and C1-10 Chopsaws, which are designed for both the removal of legacy infrastructure and the installation and commissioning of new offshore assets. These tools are capable of fast and controlled cutting of mooring chains, ranging from 80 mm to 200 mm in diameter, during installation to remove excess chain after tensioning. Decom Engineering emphasizes its role as an engineering business that solves cutting problems throughout an asset's lifecycle, rather than solely a decommissioning contractor. The C1-16UL, developed specifically for mooring chains, has demonstrated efficiency by completing cuts in under 15 minutes, significantly faster than client benchmarks. The smaller C1-10 model, launched earlier this year, is deployable by remotely operated vehicles (ROV) for lighter mooring chains and greater depths. Additionally, a retention clamp system allows for secure recovery of cut links on live assets.
