The European Investment Bank (EIB) has provided a new credit line of one billion euros to Elia Transmission Belgium, the high-voltage grid operator. This funding is designated for the construction of the Princess Elisabeth Island, an artificial energy
island located in the North Sea. This island is designed to consolidate and transmit electricity generated by offshore wind turbines, including those from other North Sea wind farms, to the mainland. The EIB's credit line is reportedly the largest ever granted by the bank for a single energy project. Specifically, the funds will cover the high-voltage station on the island, transformers, and alternating current connections to the mainland. This latest credit line follows a previous EIB loan of 650 million euros for the same project. Elia estimates the total cost for the first phase of the island, which includes construction and connection to the first two wind farms in the new wind zone, to be 3.6 billion euros. A subsequent phase, involving direct current infrastructure for a third wind park and a new high-voltage cable to the United Kingdom, has been postponed due to rising costs.
