What's Happening?
Samir Patil, a former McKinsey consultant and founder of Scroll.in, has launched Stck.me, an e-commerce platform designed to transform the book sales industry by allowing publishers and authors to sell directly to readers. The platform, which launched in 2021,
offers a model where publishers and authors retain 75-90% of sales revenue and maintain customer relationships, unlike traditional models dominated by companies like Amazon. Stck.me supports the sale of individual chapters, webcomics, e-books, audiobooks, and print books via print-on-demand. The platform currently lists titles from major Indian publishers and aims to expand its reach, particularly in North America.
Why It's Important?
Stck.me's model challenges the traditional book sales paradigm, which often sees publishers and authors losing significant revenue and customer data to intermediaries like Amazon. By allowing direct sales, Stck.me empowers publishers and authors to retain more control over their products and customer relationships. This could lead to a shift in the publishing industry, encouraging more direct-to-consumer sales and potentially reducing the dominance of large e-commerce platforms. The platform's success could inspire similar models in other industries where intermediaries currently dominate.
What's Next?
Stck.me plans to expand its international sales, focusing on North America. While discussions with major U.S. publishers are ongoing, no agreements have been finalized. The platform's growth will depend on its ability to attract more publishers and readers, as well as its capacity to handle increased transactions. The success of this model could prompt other industries to explore similar direct-to-consumer strategies, potentially reshaping market dynamics.
