Electra and The Atlas Group have announced a significant airframe agreement for the EL9 Ultra Short airplane. This partnership combines Electra’s innovative aircraft design with Atlas’s aerospace manufacturing expertise. Under the agreement, Atlas will
be responsible for manufacturing and assembling EL9 airframes for Electra’s flight test and certification program. Work is slated to commence this month at Atlas’s facilities, with the first deliveries anticipated in 2027. The EL9 is a nine-passenger hybrid-electric aircraft designed for ultra-short takeoffs and landings, requiring as little as 150 feet of runway. This capability aims to enable direct aviation, allowing air service to operate closer to communities, bypassing distant and congested airports. The aircraft utilizes blown-lift aerodynamics and distributed electric propulsion for its short-field performance, complemented by a turbogenerator for onboard electrical power, ensuring practical regional range and payload. This collaboration is a crucial step for Electra as it moves from technology demonstration towards the certification, production, and commercialization of the EL9.

Following the airframe agreement, Atlas will begin manufacturing and assembling EL9 airframes this month, with initial deliveries expected in 2027. Electra is rapidly progressing towards the certification and commercialization of the EL9. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has already established the certification basis for the EL9, outlining the framework for several industry firsts, including distributed hybrid-electric propulsion and blown lift for ultra-short takeoff and landing. Electra has also secured a life-of-program development and production agreement with Safran for the TG600 turbogenerator, which will power the EL9. The company has received over 2,200 provisional aircraft orders from more than 60 operators globally, and Bristow Group has secured the first EL9 delivery slot. The next steps involve continued flight testing, working through the certification process with the FAA, and establishing the production infrastructure at the Springfield, Ohio facility to meet the anticipated demand for the aircraft, with commercial service targeted for 2030.
