What's Happening?
Primo Brands Corp. has inaugurated a new 200,000-square-foot factory for its Mountain Valley spring water brand in Hot Springs, Arkansas. This facility marks the company's first new factory since its formation following a 2024 merger and is designed to meet
the increasing consumer demand for premium spring water. The Mountain Valley water, sourced from the Ouachita Mountains since 1871, is known for its natural minerality and crisp taste. The new multi-million-dollar greenfield facility includes one retail high-speed and two large-format production lines, along with logistics and warehouse spaces, aimed at modernizing manufacturing for more efficient production. Governor Sarah Sanders highlighted that the factory will help more Americans enjoy the product while creating jobs in Arkansas. U.S. Rep. Bruce Westerman, R-Hot Springs, also acknowledged the brand's long-standing presence and its role in showcasing Arkansas's natural resources.
Why It's Important?
The opening of Primo Brands' new Mountain Valley factory underscores a significant shift in American beverage consumption patterns. Water has become the country's number-one packaged beverage by volume for 11 consecutive years, surpassing soda, according to the Beverage Marketing Corporation. In 2025, packaged water accounted for 46% of refreshment beverage volume. This trend indicates a growing consumer preference for healthier hydration options, with premium water being a particularly fast-growing segment. Consumers are increasingly making choices based on source, taste, and quality. For Arkansas, the new factory represents economic growth and job creation, as noted by Governor Sanders and Cole McCaskill, Greater Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce Interim President and CEO. The expansion also solidifies Primo Brands' position in the premium water market, as it owns two of the five fastest-growing premium water brands in the U.S., including Mountain Valley and Saratoga.
What's Next?
The increased production capacity from the new Mountain Valley factory is expected to further capitalize on the rising demand for premium bottled water across the U.S. Primo Brands will likely focus on expanding its distribution to reach more consumers who are actively seeking high-quality water options. The company's strategy of investing where growth is accelerating suggests potential for further expansion or acquisition in the premium beverage sector. The continued success of brands like Mountain Valley could also encourage other beverage companies to invest more in the bottled water market, potentially leading to increased competition and innovation in product offerings. From a regional perspective, the factory's operation will continue to provide employment opportunities and contribute to the local economy in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Beyond the Headlines
The surge in demand for premium bottled water, exemplified by Mountain Valley's expansion, reflects broader societal trends concerning health, wellness, and environmental consciousness. While bottled water offers convenience and perceived purity, it also raises questions about environmental impact, particularly regarding plastic waste and water resource management. The brand's use of glass bottles for some products, and its sourcing from natural springs, may appeal to consumers seeking more sustainable or natural options. However, the overall growth of the packaged water industry necessitates ongoing discussions about responsible sourcing, packaging innovations, and recycling infrastructure. The emphasis on 'source, taste, and quality' in consumer choices for premium water also highlights a growing discernment among consumers, pushing brands to be more transparent about their product origins and characteristics.
