The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that over 3,000 lawsuits against major tech companies, including Meta, TikTok, Google, and Snap, can proceed. These lawsuits, filed by states, municipalities, school districts, and individuals, allege that the
companies have deliberately designed their platforms to be addictive, particularly to young users. The court rejected the companies' claims of immunity under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which protects them from liability for user-generated content. The lawsuits are consolidated before District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, who previously ruled that most of the litigation could proceed.
