What's Happening?
The DECC’s Haunted Ship attraction is celebrating its 31st anniversary, and as part of the preparations, Communications Director Lucie Amundsen underwent a significant makeup transformation. Makeup artist Zoey Nicole used airbrush techniques and custom
prosthetics to turn Amundsen into a gaunt, witchy character with a skeleton-inspired look. Nicole explained that the process involves 'gaunting' by building shadows under the brow bone, cheekbone, and jawbone to hollow out the face. The Haunted Ship, which started over three decades ago after people showed interest in exploring the William A. Irvin ship, now attracts over 25,000 visitors annually over approximately 16 days. Makeup plays a crucial role, with about 50 actors undergoing similar transformations on busy nights.
Why It's Important?
The elaborate makeup transformations at the Haunted Ship highlight the significant role of special effects and artistry in the entertainment industry, particularly within seasonal attractions. This dedication to character creation enhances the immersive experience for visitors, contributing to the success and longevity of events like the Haunted Ship. The use of airbrushing and custom prosthetics demonstrates advanced makeup techniques that are essential for creating believable and impactful characters. Furthermore, the attraction's history, evolving from an informal interest to a major annual event drawing thousands, underscores the economic and cultural importance of local entertainment venues. It provides seasonal employment for artists and actors and offers a unique community experience, solidifying its place as a regional Halloween staple.
What's Next?
The Haunted Ship will continue its annual run, offering both the traditional scare experience and a new 'Not So Haunted Tour' for those who prefer to appreciate the detailed sets without jump scares. Makeup artist Zoey Nicole and her team will likely continue to create new and elaborate character designs, potentially expanding their use of custom prosthetics and advanced techniques. The attraction's success suggests continued growth in visitor numbers and potentially further innovations in its offerings. For volunteers, the opportunity to participate in the transformations and scare school will remain, fostering a community of recurring participants. The focus will be on maintaining the high level of immersive frights and detailed artistry that has made the Haunted Ship a long-standing Halloween tradition.
