Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) has announced $2.5 million in federal funding for the City of Brownsville Public Works Department. This funding, provided through the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA), is designated for the design and
construction of the Marina Industrial Park. The project includes developing roadway, water, sewer, and stormwater infrastructure. The total projected cost for this initiative is $4,395,000. The Marina Industrial Park is planned to feature five multi-tenant industrial buildings, four of which will be 150,000 square feet each, and one slightly smaller at 140,000 square feet. It will be strategically located on FM 511 in Brownsville’s northern industrial corridor, offering proximity to two interstate highways, four international bridges, the Port of Brownsville, three international airports, and a U.S.-Mexico rail crossing. Brownsville Mayor John Cowen, Jr. expressed gratitude for the investment, highlighting its role in supporting the city's economic potential.
Why It's Important?
This federal investment is poised to significantly boost economic development in Brownsville and the broader Rio Grande Valley. The project is estimated to create 590 new jobs and leverage over $18 million in private investment, indicating a substantial economic impact. By enhancing critical infrastructure, the Marina Industrial Park aims to attract new industries and manufacturers, strengthening Brownsville's position as a hub for international trade and manufacturing. The improved transportation and utility infrastructure will meet the growing demands of economic expansion, providing a more attractive environment for businesses. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to foster regional growth and create quality employment opportunities, contributing to the economic stability and prosperity of South Texas. The strategic location of the industrial park is expected to facilitate efficient goods movement across North America, further solidifying its importance.
