What's Happening?
FlowBelow has introduced a redesigned Trailer AeroSlider aerodynamic system aimed at helping trucking fleets reduce fuel consumption. The updated system, unveiled at the American Trucking Associations’ Management Conference & Exhibition in Charlotte,
North Carolina, is smaller, more durable, and lighter than its predecessor. It combines trailer wheel covers, flow-through mud flaps, and rear fairings, which together are estimated to save 3 gallons of diesel per 1,000 miles. The system was developed using computer airflow modeling, wind-tunnel testing, and track testing. It mounts to the sliding suspension and moves with the tandems, fitting most dry van and refrigerated trailers, and can be retrofitted in under 45 minutes. The company claims a potential payback period of less than a year for fleets, depending on fuel prices and trailer mileage.
Why It's Important?
This redesign is significant for the U.S. trucking industry, which constantly seeks ways to improve fuel efficiency and reduce operational costs. Fuel is a major expense for trucking companies, and even small improvements in fuel economy can lead to substantial savings across large fleets. The AeroSlider's estimated savings of 3 gallons per 1,000 miles translates to approximately $556 annually per trailer traveling 30,000 miles, based on a diesel price of $6.18 per gallon. This can directly impact the profitability of trucking businesses, making them more competitive. Furthermore, enhanced fuel efficiency contributes to reduced carbon emissions, aligning with growing environmental sustainability goals within the transportation sector and potentially influencing regulatory standards for vehicle aerodynamics.
What's Next?
FlowBelow expects the redesigned AeroSlider to be adopted by more trucking fleets looking to optimize their operational costs. The system is available directly from FlowBelow for retrofit installations and can also be specified on new trailers through participating manufacturers. The company's goal is for the AeroSlider to become a standard component for fleets aiming to reduce trailer drag without adding significant weight or maintenance. Continued independent testing and real-world performance data will be crucial in demonstrating the long-term benefits and widespread adoption of this technology. The success of such innovations could also spur further research and development in aerodynamic solutions for heavy-duty vehicles.
Beyond the Headlines
The continuous innovation in trailer aerodynamics, exemplified by FlowBelow's AeroSlider, reflects a broader trend in the transportation industry towards incremental yet impactful technological advancements. While individual components like wheel covers and fairings might seem minor, their cumulative effect on fuel consumption and emissions is substantial. This focus on efficiency extends beyond just cost savings; it also addresses the industry's environmental footprint and its role in climate change mitigation. The ease of installation and minimal driver involvement of such systems are key factors in their adoption, indicating a preference for solutions that integrate seamlessly into existing operations. This ongoing pursuit of efficiency highlights the industry's commitment to sustainability and economic viability in the face of fluctuating fuel prices and increasing environmental regulations.
