What's Happening?
Hillgrove Resources has received board approval for the development of the Emily Star underground mining front at its Kanmantoo Copper Mine in South Australia. This project is set to become the third underground operation at the site, with an estimated
capital requirement of A$20m ($14m) to A$22m. The development is expected to be funded entirely through operating cash flow. Recent drilling has confirmed geological continuity and grade distribution, aligning with the existing block model. The company plans to start stoping activities in the second half of 2027, following the completion of development and level access works. The Emily Star project aims to replace some output from the lower-level Kavanagh area while maintaining a two-million-tonne annual run rate at Kanmantoo.
Why It's Important?
The approval of the Emily Star development is a significant step for Hillgrove Resources as it seeks to enhance its operational flexibility and sustain copper production over the life of the mine. By adding a new mining front, the company can better manage its resources and potentially increase its output. This development is crucial for maintaining the economic viability of the Kanmantoo site, especially as it aims to replace output from other areas. The project also reflects Hillgrove's commitment to leveraging its geological models and operational strategies to maximize resource extraction. The decision to fund the project through operating cash flow indicates a strong financial position and confidence in the project's profitability.
What's Next?
Hillgrove Resources plans to submit an updated environment protection and rehabilitation programme later in the year, with approval anticipated before the start of stoping activities. The company will continue to work on the Mutooroo stage one pre-feasibility study, which, along with the Emily Star development, has led to a revision of its 2026 major capital guidance to A$15m–A$17m. As the project progresses, Hillgrove will focus on ensuring that the development aligns with its strategic goals and operational capabilities. Stakeholders, including investors and local communities, will likely monitor the project's impact on production levels and environmental management closely.
