What's Happening?
Legends Global has entered into a five-year public-private partnership with the City of Mesa, Arizona, to manage the Mesa Amphitheatre and Mesa Convention Center. This agreement grants Legends Global oversight of operations, marketing, and strategic development
for both downtown venues. The partnership is designed to facilitate improvements at both facilities, positioning them for long-term growth and enabling them to attract larger concerts, conventions, and events across the Valley. The City of Mesa will maintain ownership of both properties. The Mesa Amphitheatre, established in the late 1970s, has a seating capacity of approximately 5,000 and is a significant regional draw for entertainment and community events. The Mesa Convention Center is the largest event venue in the East Valley, featuring nearly 40,000 square feet of meeting and exhibit space, including a 19,000-square-foot main exhibit hall, 26 breakout rooms, and 40,000 square feet of outdoor function space. It currently hosts over 300 functions annually, ranging from conventions and trade shows to banquets and community gatherings.
Why It's Important?
This partnership is important for Mesa as it seeks to revitalize its downtown area and enhance its reputation as a destination for events and tourism. By leveraging Legends Global's operational expertise and industry connections, the city aims to expand the quantity, quality, and diversity of entertainment and events offered. This could lead to increased visitor traffic, boosting local businesses and generating economic growth for downtown Mesa. The planned upgrades to the Mesa Amphitheatre are expected to improve revenue potential and the overall experience for both artists and attendees, making the venue more competitive in attracting high-profile acts. Similarly, the enhanced service levels and event experience at the Mesa Convention Center will help it better compete for larger conventions and trade shows, further solidifying Mesa's position as a key event hub in the East Valley. Residents and the broader region stand to benefit from a more vibrant cultural and economic landscape, fostering a greater sense of community connection and pride.
What's Next?
Legends Global will collaborate with the City of Mesa on an upgrade schedule for the Mesa Amphitheatre, focusing on elevating revenue potential, service levels, and the overall experience for artists and attendees. For the Mesa Convention Center, Legends Global will implement its operational expertise to enhance service levels and the event experience, complementing the planned improvements for the outdoor venue. The goal is to further position downtown Mesa as a premier destination for meetings and events. Josh Kritzler, President, North American Venues & Content, Legends Global, stated that their objective is to expand the quantity, quality, and diversity of entertainment to appeal to all segments of the Mesa community. The partnership aims to foster a sense of connection and pride among residents and the broader region regarding both venues, capitalizing on the positive momentum in the region to achieve the city's vision for its residents and visitors.
Beyond the Headlines
This public-private partnership signifies a growing trend in urban development where municipalities collaborate with specialized private entities to manage and enhance public assets. This model allows cities to tap into private sector expertise, resources, and networks, potentially leading to more efficient operations and innovative programming than traditional municipal management. For Mesa, this could mean not just an increase in events but also a strategic rebranding of its downtown core, attracting new businesses and residents. The success of this venture could serve as a blueprint for other mid-sized cities looking to revitalize their urban centers through cultural and event-driven initiatives. However, it also raises questions about the balance between public ownership and private management, and how to ensure that community interests remain prioritized alongside commercial objectives. The long-term impact will depend on how effectively Legends Global integrates with the local community and delivers on its promise to diversify offerings and enhance visitor experiences.
