What's Happening?
The Orlando Magic has announced a new partnership with Cox Media Group's WFTV Channel 9 and WRDQ-TV 27 to serve as the team's local television broadcast partners starting with the 2026-27 season. This multi-year agreement will make these channels the free,
over-the-air home for Orlando Magic basketball, providing fans with access to live games, replays, pregame and postgame coverage, and original programming. The partnership aims to enhance the viewing experience for Magic fans across Central Florida, including areas like Orlando, Tampa, and Gainesville. Additionally, the Magic will have a streaming deal with DAZN for games not nationally televised.
Why It's Important?
This partnership is significant as it ensures that Orlando Magic games remain accessible to a broad audience in Central Florida, especially in the wake of the regional sports network (RSN) collapse. By choosing over-the-air broadcasts, the Magic are following a trend seen with other NBA teams like the Charlotte Hornets, aiming to reach a wider audience and maintain fan engagement. The deal also provides a new platform for local businesses to connect with the team's passionate fan base, potentially boosting local economic activity. However, the revenue from this deal is expected to be less than what the team previously earned from RSN agreements.
What's Next?
As the 2026-27 NBA season approaches, further details about game schedules and additional programming will be announced. The Magic and Cox Media Group will likely focus on maximizing the reach and engagement of their broadcasts to compensate for the reduced revenue compared to previous RSN deals. Fans can expect more interactive and engaging content as the team leverages its new broadcast and streaming platforms.
