What's Happening?
MBDA has announced the start of low-rate production for its Spear air-to-surface missile, known as Selective Precision Effects At Range (SPEAR 3), at the Farnborough International Airshow 2026. The missile, designed for use with the F-35B Lightning II,
features advanced navigation and targeting systems, including GPS/inertial mid-course navigation and a dual-mode seeker. The UK Ministry of Defence has developed the Spear as a powered stand-off weapon for both domestic use and export. Recent trials involved a US Marine Corps F-35B carrying the missiles, with plans for full integration and testing by the end of 2026. MBDA has also signed a memorandum of understanding with General Atomics Aeronautical Systems to equip their UAVs with the Spear missile.
