What's Happening?
Cargill is investing more than $130 million over the next two years to expand its poultry operations across Asia, specifically in Thailand and the Philippines. This investment aims to enhance capacity and efficiency throughout Cargill’s poultry network
in these regions. A key part of this expansion includes deploying advanced technologies to optimize production processes and reduce costs. In Thailand, a new automated cooked chicken production line is being installed at Cargill’s Saraburi plant, expected to be operational by 2028. The company will also introduce technological upgrades, incorporating state-of-the-art machinery and integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into data processing to improve decision-making speed and accuracy. Additionally, Cargill is constructing a new 30,000 metric ton grain silo in Thailand to boost raw material storage and procurement flexibility. In the Philippines, the investment includes building a new feed mill with an annual production capacity of 190,000 metric tons, anticipated to be completed by late 2027. Cargill is also expanding its network of hatcheries, breeder, and broiler farms in the Philippines to enhance supply and cost efficiencies.
Why It's Important?
This significant investment by Cargill underscores the growing global demand for protein and high-quality cooked poultry products. By strengthening its supply chain resilience and enhancing food safety and quality, Cargill aims to better serve its foodservice and retail customers worldwide. The technological advancements, including AI integration, are crucial for maintaining rigorous food quality and safety management systems, which are paramount in the food industry. The expansion in Thailand is projected to increase Cargill’s total cooked poultry volume to approximately 160,000 metric tons, generating 25 billion Thai Baht in export value annually for Thailand and creating over 300 local jobs. The new grain silo in Thailand will provide additional income opportunities for local farmers beyond the traditional harvest season, fostering economic growth in agricultural communities. In the Philippines, the new feed mill and expanded farm network will strengthen the local poultry supply chain, improve feed availability, and create over 100 jobs, benefiting domestic foodservice customers and Filipino consumers.
What's Next?
Over the next two years, Cargill will continue to implement technological upgrades and construction projects in Thailand and the Philippines. The automated cooked chicken production line in Saraburi, Thailand, is expected to be completed by 2028, while the new grain silo in Thailand is slated for completion by early 2027. The new feed mill in the Philippines is projected to be finished by late 2027. These developments will lead to increased production capacity and efficiency, allowing Cargill to meet the rising demand for protein in global markets. The company will also focus on integrating AI into its data processing to drive faster and more accurate decision-making, further enhancing its food quality and safety management systems. The expansion is expected to create new job opportunities and provide economic benefits for local farmers and communities in both countries.
