Critical Metals Corp. (Nasdaq: CRML) has announced significant advancements in its mine-to-metals strategy for the Tanbreez Rare Earth Project in Greenland. The company's proposed Romanian joint venture refinery, which will process 50% of the concentrate
production, incorporates three major process innovations. These innovations are designed to prevent silica gel formation, achieve complete silica recovery to produce high-purity SiO2 powder, and utilize vacuum freeze-drying for 19 chloride salts to create anhydrous, ultra-low-moisture powders. The refinery is projected to process up to 100,000 tons per year of eudialyte concentrate, yielding approximately 27,943 tons per year of rare earth and critical metal products, along with 25,670 tons per year of high-purity SiO2 powder. This process aims to reduce tailings to less than 1.5% of feed material and recycle acid, potentially cutting fresh acid consumption by about 85%.

The projected annual revenue of approximately $1.8 billion to $2.2 billion from the refinery, with an estimated $600 million from silica by-product alone, highlights the economic potential and the transformation of a conventional waste stream into a valuable asset. Critical Metals Corp. will continue with further engineering, metallurgical test work, and market condition assessments. The company also needs to secure permitting and make final investment decisions for the proposed Romanian refinery. The current preliminary CAPEX estimate for the refinery is $1.85 billion (+/-25% Class 4 estimate). The company plans to register its capabilities across the U.S. Defense Industrial Base Consortium (DIBC) and the Government-managed Cornerstone Consortium to respond to defense solicitations and engage with defense agencies and prime contractors. This will position its Carp and Panthera projects within U.S. defense procurement frameworks, aiming to address critical U.S. supply gaps in materials like fluorspar and graphite.
